Maids at Mount Holyoke

Maids lived in nearly every dorm on campus until fifty years ago. Dormitory maids were often similar in age to the students they lived alongside and cleaned up after, but they lived very different lives.

The ideal twentieth-century servant was invisible, and accordingly little documentation concerning maids was created or saved. This student-curated Archives and Special Collections campus-wide exhibit aims to bring the names and stories of some of the maids who worked at Mount Holyoke to light, with the conviction that they should not remain invisible in history.

If you or a family member has worked at Mount Holyoke as a housekeeper or a maid, we would like to learn more about that experience. The archives is interested in collecting photographs, uniforms, and other materials. Please contact us by email at
