Description
Many college students participated in the historic 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, including 29 students from Mount Holyoke. This photo from the march shows signs with the variety of issues they were protesting for: voting rights, equal rights, better housing, and an end to police brutality.
Image Description: A predominantly Black crowd of adults stand on the National Mall. Many hold posters high on yardsticks, or long banners stretched between two poles with messages demanding racial equality. A sampling of the signs include: “WE DEMAND DECENT HOUSING NOW!” “WE DEMAND EQUAL RIGHTS NOW!” “WE DEMAND AN END TO POLICE BRUTALITY NOW!” “NO U.S. DOUGH TO HELP JIM CROW GROW.” What appears to be a wicker hat and a bush in the foreground obscure some of the crowd. The Washington Monument is visible in the background, rising between the lines of trees.
