Votes for Women Pins, ca. 1914-1918
Description
These Votes for Women pins are from the memory books of Margaret Niles ‘14 (bottom right), Madeline Wayne ‘15 (bottom left), and Ruth Sonn ‘18 (top center). The phrase “Votes for Women” was a common slogan used on suffrage ephemera and was often printed on objects such as postcards, pamphlets, and ribbons in addition to pins. Suffrage pins were often worn to show support for the cause—Ruth’s pin was displayed on her academic hood at her commencement ceremony.

The six stars around the text and the ring of color at the edge of the button’s face are both a deep royal blue. Altogether, the color scheme is reminiscent of the American flag.
