Voter Registration Program, April 9, 1965
Description
An account of the resource
Two art professors, Sheila McNally and Susan Mangam, and one student, Cheryl Edmonds ‘67, joined the civil rights protesters who marched from Selma to Montgomery in 1965. In this article from The Mount Holyoke News, they describe their experience traveling to Alabama by bus, sleeping in the pews of a Methodist church, and marching to the capitol. In particular, they note how the experience allowed them to recognize their white, middle class identity and in doing so, were able to be more critical of themselves and their “comfortable standards.”

View the full newspaper here.

List of Students from the March on Washington, 1963
Description
An account of the resource
This list shows the names of the 29 students from Mount Holyoke who went to the March on Washington in August of 1963. Over 250,000 people marched to protest the inequalities faced by African Americans. The march was influential in the passing of both the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. These acts outlawed discrimination based on race, color, sex, religion, and national origin and abolished the literacy tests and poll taxes that were frequently used to bar African Americans from voting.

Students at the March on Washington, August 28, 1963
Description
An account of the resource
Many college students participated in the historic 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, including 29 students from Mount Holyoke. This photo from the march shows signs with the variety of issues they were protesting for: voting rights, equal rights, better housing, and an end to police brutality.

Image Description: A predominantly Black crowd of adults stand on the National Mall. Many hold posters high on yardsticks, or long banners stretched between two poles with messages demanding racial equality. A sampling of the signs include: “WE DEMAND DECENT HOUSING NOW!” “WE DEMAND EQUAL RIGHTS NOW!” “WE DEMAND AN END TO POLICE BRUTALITY NOW!” “NO U.S. DOUGH TO HELP JIM CROW GROW.” What appears to be a wicker hat and a bush in the foreground obscure some of the crowd. Description
An account of the resource
Jeannette Marks, English professor and life partner of Mount Holyoke President Mary Woolley, was a strong supporter of the women’s rights movement. Marks and Woolley had several collies which were popular with students; one is shown here wearing a white hat and carrying baskets of daffodils around campus to be sold to raise money for the suffrage movement.

Image Description: A slightly blurry photograph of a Collie standing outside. A figure (presumably Jeannette Marks) stands to the right in a large dark skirt, holding its leash; the dog looks toward her. The dog wears a pointed hat upon its head, strapped under the chin, and wicker saddlebags. The baskets at its sides are filled with daffodils, overflowing along its body. Figures walk along paths in the background.

Mount Holyoke Students Participate in State Convention, 1908
Description
An account of the resource
Before Mount Holyoke’s mock national election, where the student representatives from each state would meet to vote, the students held a mock state convention. In a letter at the time, a student explains that at this mock convention, students were organized by their residence hall, each of which represented a state. This photo from 1908 shows the “state convention.” The states represented in this photo are Kentucky, Texas, Nebraska, New York, and Massachusetts, but it is possible that others are out of frame. There is no clear indication of why these states were chosen to represent each residence hall, as many of these states are not representative of the Northeastern student population.

Image Description: Hundreds of students crowd an early Blanchard Hall. Most stand on the ground floor among rows of wooden chairs, but many others watch from the balcony on the upper floor; those in the first row sit at the floor’s edge, clutching the railing as their feet dangle. The photographer likely stood on the balcony as well to obtain the view of the action. Thirteen other students, some dressed as male candidates, stand upon the stage at the background of the photo. Students within the crowd hold banners for Kentucky, Texas, Nebraska, and Massachusetts, and posters for Ohio and New York (represented by the state seal). At the top of the photo, gymnasium ropes, twisted out of the way, are visible.

We had a Republican Convention last week in the gym. All the girls were dressed like men, and had wigs + beards. On the platform were Theodore Roosevelt (the girl looked exactly like him) Taft, Carrie Nation, & Mr & Mrs. Longworth. Mrs. Longworth wore a sheath-gown and smoked a cigarette which quite shocked Carrie Nation. There was a pitcher of wine on the table and Carrie Nation broke it with her hatchet. Quite exciting. Susie Martin, Class of 1911, Letter to Mother, 1908
Description
An account of the resource
In a letter to her mother postmarked October 25, Susie ‘11 mentions attending a mock Republican Convention. She notes that “[a]ll the girls were dressed like men, and had wigs + beards” to impersonate various candidates. Students dressed as convention attendees including Carrie Nation, Howard Taft, Nicholas and Alice Longworth, and Theodore Roosevelt. Carrie Nation was a militant member of the temperance movement, so the student dressed as her included physical actions: after seeing “a pitcher of wine on the table… Carrie Nation broke it with her hatchet. Quite exciting.” The students’ commitment to their roles displays not only an awareness of politics, but a deep interest and understanding of the prominent figures and platforms at a time when women were still a dozen years from the vote.

Drawn by two horses, the wagon carries an oversized liquor barrel covered in prohibitionist slogans such as “Kick out the keg!!!”

Image Description: Two students facing left sit astride the horses harnessed to a wooden wagon carrying a large wooden barrel. Other students sit at the carriage’s rear, one standing to speak to the students clustered around her. Unfamiliar brick buildings are visible in the background, likely academic halls that have since been torn down. Supporters of the Prohibition Party Marching, 1904
Description
An account of the resource
This photo shows Mount Holyoke students marching in support of the Prohibition Party which was nationally headed by Silas Swallow in the 1904 election. The main belief held by the Prohibition Party was temperance—opposition to the sale or consumption of alcoholic beverages. These Mount Holyoke students hold torches, wear paper pitchers on their heads, and wave signs featuring doves and ‘peace’. Written on the original photo was the chant “Prohibition! Prohibition! We’ll turn our glasses upside down and down with the red, red wine!”

Image Description: Many students variously attired and holding signs congregate outside a brick building; one student peers down at the parade from a window on the second story. Several of the students wear matching blouses, white skirts, and paper “pitchers” on their heads. Some carry torches aloft; others posters of pitchers or advocating for “peace.” Most are not readable due to overexposure. Some students are clad in all white with cylinders of paper worn as masks with cutouts for their eyes, nose, and mouth. Others wear military garb over their dresses and have mustaches and goatees drawn on their faces. The line of students continues on in a blurry and semi-indistinguishable fashion. In white ink in the photo’s upper right corner is written “‘Prohibition! Prohibition! / We’ll turn our glasses upside down / And down with the red, red wine!’”
