Dearest, if only you could
come to me. I feel as
if I were in a horrible
nightmare and the time
seems endless.
Saturday the doctors said
that an operation was out
[2]
of the question that Mamma
could not live through it,
but that night and
yesterday morning she rallied
and they felt that there
was one chance in a
hundred that she might
stand it, with no chance
if it were not performed.
[3]
So we did it at the
house at five o’clock
yesterday afternoon. The
operation itself was
entirely successful and
not as complicated as
they had feared. There was
a “kink,” as they called
[4]
it, in the intestine, causing
a stoppage. She is
suffering terribly from
the shock and the
question is whether she
has vitality to survive.
It will be three
or four days before
she is out of danger

and in the meantime this
helpless standing-by, is
terrible. The house has [???]
terrified nurses and quiet
is so imperative that
I have been in her
room only twice this morning.
[6]
She is weaker and I
have little hope, Jean.
Would you not come
to me if the worst
should come? It seems
to me that I could
not bear it not to
have you.
[7]
I am sorry about the
ticket home, Jean. It
was only that you
do not like them
and I thought that
you would rather not
be called up.
Your own Mudjie
